Named for Edgefield's fabled mascot, the 2009 Black Rabbit Red is a bold blend of predominately Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with hints of Pinot Noir, Syrah, Zinfandel and Viognier added into the blend. The nose is bright and fruity with hints of ripe red cherry and raspberry preserves paired with sweet oak aromas of graham cracker, cinnamon and vanilla. The palate shows a moderately full-bodied, dry wine, with assertive fruit tannins and a lingering finish.

The Edgefield Winery is located at the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge at historic McMenamins Edgefield, site of the former Multnomah County Poor Farm (ca. 1911). Black Rabbit Red is primarily composed of classic Bordeaux varietals, namely 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 20% Pinot Noir, 3% Syrah and 2% Zinfandel.

“What’s with the bunny?,” guests always want to know. During Edgefield’s early days of crumbling buildings and overgrown gardens, a group of McMenamins folk was standing in the midst of the madness, trying to imagine the property’s future. Talk stopped as a black rabbit came hopping down the hill, scampering past them before disappearing into its hole. Inspiration struck -- since that moment, McMenamins has tried to convey a “down-the-rabbit-hole” vibe, where the whimsical and the unexpected come together. The black rabbit now appears as one of our signature icons throughout our properties.
