“What’s with the bunny?,” guests always want to know. During Edgefield’s early days of crumbling buildings and overgrown gardens, a group of McMenamins folk was standing in the midst of the madness, trying to imagine the property’s future. Talk stopped as a black rabbit came hopping down the hill, scampering past them before disappearing into its hole. Inspiration struck -- since that moment, McMenamins has tried to convey a “down-the-rabbit-hole” vibe, where the whimsical and the unexpected come together. The black rabbit now appears as one of our signature icons throughout our properties.
Edgefield Winery in Troutdale, Ore., is located in the former commissary of the historic 1911 Edgefield property. The Winery had its first crush in 1990 and later established its own vineyards and tasting room. Today, visitors to the Tasting Room can sample flights of either reds or whites and can purchase Edgefield wines including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Black Rabbit Red, White Rabbit and many others. Every April, the Winery hosts the two-day “Celebration of Syrah,” a festival that draws vintners, wine-lovers and daytrippers from across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
